The Footnote That Became Your Retirement Plan

The Footnote That Became Your Retirement Plan

In 1978, Congress slipped a short provision into a tax bill. Almost nobody noticed. Two years later a benefits consultant named Ted Benna read it closely and used it to build the first plan of its kind. He has spent much of the time since warning people about what he helped create.

A tax footnote became the entire retirement plan for a generation of American workers.

The 401(k) was designed as a bonus. Something extra sitting on top of a pension. Then the pensions faded out and the bonus became the whole plan. The arrangement now asks you to hand over money for forty years, accept whatever the market hands back, and hope the final number stretches across three decades of living.

Look closely at what you trade for that deal. Your money sits behind a penalty until you are fifty-nine and a half. You get no leverage. You get no depreciation. You get no say in how the asset performs. Your balance rises and falls on headlines written by people who have never heard your name.

Commercial real estate runs on different arithmetic. Twenty five percent down controls an entire building. Tenants cover the debt service. Depreciation shelters income you have already collected. Rents climb as inflation climbs, which turns the force that quietly drains a savings account into a tailwind instead. And the income arrives monthly, starting at whatever age you decide to begin.

Retirement becomes a decision the moment your assets pay you before you stop working.

At Driven Life Academy we show investors how to build income that arrives decades before sixty-five.
